Our 4th son was borne on 22nd June. Portable DVD player is no longer suitable for the kids because our eldest now will have to sit at the third row.

Added a Malaysian made DVD player, ceiling mounted 9.2 inches LCD and a video booster. For RM650 inclusive of labour, it's a bargain!

The DVD player can handle all currently cheaply available disc type, has USB and SD card slot. It comes with a remote and a set of pre-out. The speakers are still powered by the original head unit. The signal was sent from the DVD player's pre-out to the original player's video input which is available underneath the glovebox (facelifted Ipsum - not). However, the brilliant installer dismantle the input and hide the connection for a neat installation.

The DVD has only 1 video out thus the need for the video booster. The booster accepts 1 input and provide 4 new output which I currently only use 2. 1 for the front original player and 1 for the roof monitor. Prior to that the installer used a splitter which degraded the video signal.

As a result of this installation, I can also use the DVD player's radio to listen to all local stations. Previously with the original radio and an FM booster, some frequencies cannot be catch. However, the installer must have forgotten to connect the antenna.

In another installation whereby the original head unit was replaced with a new DVD player with built in LCD monitor feeding signal to a roof monitor, the roof monitor will display whatever being displayed in the built in monitor. This means when reverse gear is engaged while playing video, the roof monitor will also display the reverse camera images. In my Ipsum's installation, this is not the case. Since the video signal comes from the separate DVD player, the roof monitor will continue displaying the video while the front monitor switched to the reverse camera.

The 9.2 inches size to me is the best size. I can still use my rear view mirror with the LCD monitor fully opened. Head rest monitors may not be a good option if one considers the third row passengers. This is if only 2 head rest monitors is installed. If 4 head rest monitors is used then it should not be a problem.

My eldest son is happy watching the movies while sitting in the third row. His only complaint is the sound is not loud enough. This is because there is no speaker placement for the third row. Thus, I adjusted the fader so the second row speaker is louder than the front row. Now, I hear no more complaint.

The original front roof light was removed to make way for the LCD installation. There was a screw hole meant to serve the roof light. The LCD is affixed to the same hole. It has been a month of happy viewing.

The only glitch is the DVD player and LCD will switched off whenever the side mirror is folded. This is something that needs re-wiring of the power source.

Alternator belt change

This update should have been made in the last week.

For the past few weeks there was metal clicking sound from the engine bay. Since the Ipsum uses timing chain, I assume the sound was from the timing chain.

One fine morning last week, the sound became louder than usual. I stopped the engine, opened the engine hood and found that the alternator belt has splitted into two.

Not wanting to take any risk, I rang Kurnia Auto Assist who came helping me to bring thw Ipsum to the garage. I was told that the car could still be driven to the garage but if the belt snapped, the car would stop anyway.

RM125 of belt (Bando) and RM20 of labour costs settled the problem and killed the sound.

The belt should last 50,000 km.

Fuel Consumption, Shell RON 95

The Ipsum's fuel consumption is improving from before. For the past few tanks (less than 3 refills) has been 10.xx km/litre. All of which involving long distance journey but with considerable engine idling for interior cooling.

Tonight fill up is the best thus far. About 340 km of long distance travel and 100 km of town trips, less engine idling, the Ipsum achieved 11km/litre. I wasn't even trying to get this.

Refuel with Shell RON 95 today. I think the combination of the new tyres and ATF Cooler does makes a difference on my fuel bills.

Moderate to agressive driving style, about 1 hour of engine idling with aircondition on - 10.7 km/litre.

Travelled to Kuala Lumpur. Refuel with Shell RON 95 prior to travel.

New tyres with nitro gas, new ATF Cooler and new with Shell fuel.

Refuel in Kuala Lumpur - 11.xx km/litre. Moderate driving style and some engine idling. I'm very happy with this achievement.

Reached Johor Bahru this evening. Will refuel tomorrow.

Paid a visit to a Car Accessories shop at Taman Perling. I was recommended by a friend who sent his Alphard there.

Original plan was to test this shop's skills on changing my rear light bulb. I had 3 bulbs which needed replacements but the previous shop failed to open up and get access to do so. Fearing damage to my Ipsum, I asked the previous shop to just stop.

With this shop at Taman Perling, I had no worry at all. They used bare hands, some tools, some energy and they used their heads too. Thus, dismantling the covers looked real easy (not easy in fact).

All 3 bulbs were changed. One each for number plate light, brake light and night light. Damage to the wallet - RM20.

Satisfied with their skills, I asked about my problem with my head unit not displaying video when the parking brake is disengaged. They told me that they can solve the problem by adding wires and costed RM50. The previous shop I went asked for RM150. I went ahead.

They did it in 2 tries. After the first attempt, the video keep on the display even after the parking brake was disengaged. However, when the Ipsum reached certain speed or RPM the display went off.

After a call (like a lifeline), they told me that there was also RPM or speed sensor connected to the head unit and they shall fix it. And fix it they did.

RM70 was paid in total for the video and bulb job.

2nd Tyre Change

After unsuccessful finding of suitable Pirelli tyres (size and budget), I ended up choosing the just lauched Michelin Primacy LC. I got it for RM440 per piece at the address stated on tyre. The price inclusive of tyre valve, nitrogen gas (and free top ups after this), tyre balancing but not wheel alignments.

Primacy LC was reported to be a very good comfort tyre, being silent and comfy but not that friendly when taking corners at ecstasy speed.

The Yokohama was good when it was new. After more than a year and 40,000 km, I no longer felt confident with it. The remaining tyre thread may look as if it can last for many months to come, but we just didn't feel right about the tyre.

Toyota Mark X Zio

Went to Mofaz last weekend. They have 2 units of 2007 Mark X Zio. Published price is RM218k. I was offered RM5k discount.

I have always belief that Mark X Zio is the Ipsum replacement. I am wrong -

the last row can only accommodate 2 child. I think it is meant for a sudden / temporary need of an extra 2 seats for child.
when 6 seatings are occupied, not much room for luggage.
the spare tyre is located at the rear, no double storage as in Ipsum.
the seat is extra wide and extra comfy - this model is more higher-end than Ipsum.

I can define Mark X Zio as - suitable for those who likes Harrier but wants something closer to the ground and car like handling. For those - go and get the Mark X Zio.

I have been busy lately. But I am pleased that RON 95 does not affect the Ipsum's performance. This may be as a result of previous consumption of RON 92 thus RON 95 is like an upgrade.

However, the case is not the same with my 2004 Perdana V6. I felt less power during acceleration. The reduction is obvious.

My brother in law did also complained the same problem with his 1996 Iswara 1.3 aeroback.

We have to drive slower. Pushing the car to deliver the same power should be bad for the fuel consumption.

Weekend trip to Muar

We went to Parit Jawa, Muar last weekend. The Ipsum was installed with a clean air filter.

We are still happy with Toyota Genuine Motor Oil. The car felt stable. With the clean air filter slotted in, the acceleration is much smoother. When overtaking, power came in without notice and the engine did not sound harsh.

It is difficult to tame the accelerator paddle. The Ipsum loves cruising over the limit. At 140 km/h the Ipsum felt as if it has more to give.

My average speed was 110 km/h at the highway and 90 km/h outside the motorway.

From Parit Jawa we picked up 3 adults and proceed to Muar town. The Ipsum does not feel overload and can accelerate and overtake with ease. The weather was hot, thus the air-conditioning was worked harder. But, the engine was still less heaty than before the service.

I'll post the fuel consumption after my next re-fill.

RON 95 and consumption

It has been reported that RON95 lead to less travel. The figure of the shortage is significant enough that if this is true, this "price decrease" will be a bad detriment to the consumers at large because (1) we are getting less for the same price and (2) our vehicles travel less than before.

Some said that it is best to try all petrol brands to see which one is more suitable for your vehicle and you.

I'll be starting with Caltex RON95. Since I have been using RON92 prior to this (except the latest few fillings), I except the same or better fuel consumption for my Ipsum.

We came back from Muar last Saturday. I planned to re-fill today, after fuel price reduction from RM1-80 (RON 97) to RM1-75 (RON 95). I went to Caltex last night at about 10 PM to check whether I can re-fill at the new price. But, it RON 97 was still at its old price. Thus I went home.

The news came to me at 11.15 PM that RON 95 will also be priced at RM1-80. Too late and already tired to go back to Caltex.

What is this Mr Gomen??

If the price of RON 95 was really introduced at RM1-75, I am very certain that the news at RTM/TV3/etc will show interviews of fuel pump customers saying thank you Mr Gomen, the lower fuel price will certainly help in this difficult time, thank you for the creative thinking, we don't really need RON 97, RON 95 is good enough.

But tonight I am sure that this will not happen. I wonder why...

Trip to Singapore (Fuel Consumption)

Went to Little India in Singapore. The Ipsum was refilled few days before this last working day of the week. Because of H1N1 alert, the kids and me waited in the Ipsum for about 45 minutes (engine idling - with air-cond on). The next day before we proceed to Muar, we re-fuel and the reading was 8km/litre.

During entry, the traffic was smooth. No bottleneck or jam, but slight jam on the way of Singapore.

80,XXX km minor service

Last Sunday I gave the Ipsum a wash and sent it for a minor service. This time, I purchased a full synthetic Toyota Motor Oil (TMO) from CT Auto at Larkin (RM150) and went to City Tyre (Michelin shop at Taman Pelangi, JB). The oil filter was original Toyota and supplied by City Tyre (RM25) and the labour cost was RM15. Total spent was RM190.

This was my first experience with TMO. All this while, we used M7 engine oil. I was a bit sceptical at first because TMO is locally made for UMW Toyota, the local Toyota authorised distributor. Boy was I'm in for a surprise. TMO is a weightier oil if compared to M7. The Ipsum is a bit reluctant when accelerating with TMO. It is by no mean slow. However, once the Ipsum met the required speed, the Ipsum felt more stable. My wife who was seating at the middle row did also complemented the same.

This was my first time with Toyota Oil Filter too. Before this mostly with M7 oil filter.

This may cause us to stick to Toyota original products. The engine oil is cheaper than M7, more suitable for the engine and last longer (10,000 km). M7 lasted 5,000 km despite being a fully synthetic.

Another thing which I realise is that the front bonnet is less hot to touch after drives. Less heat should be a good thing for the engine.

I was more than happy after this service.

6,000 km ago, the Ipsum was sent to Mutiara Motor's new outlet at Larkin for service. I purposefully did not post about it to wait for this service to compare with.

The new outlet was a clean and of a high standard. There was a waiting lounge with air-conditioner, coffee, astro and LCD TV. The workshop floor is a shiny clean and I've never seen such a standard before. With all this, I was prepared for a premium pricing.

For a start, there was no longer M7 free oil filter with the purchase of the M7 engine oil. This was the first cause of a higher service. Apart from the free oil filter, I usually also get a free t-shirt which is a nice one for daily home wear.

The service was fast. My Ipsum was attended to by 3 personnels.

During the service, I was inform that my Greddy air filter is old and should be replaced. I was told that Mutiara Motor no longer have them in stock and I was recommended M7 filter which was not cheap. I asked whether I can wash my Greddy filter since it is a washable type (I have never washed the filter prior to that - overlooked the matter). The lady went to ask the mechanic and informed me that the air filter's life should have come to an end. It should be replaced.

Since I already have another clean filter at home, I went home later and install the other set. Mutiara was right that my Ipsum improved tremendeously after the other air filter was replaced. However, I have washed the dirty filter and re-fit the same to the Ipsum and it is still in good shape. I smelled somebody was trying to gain some commission from the air filter sale.

I think the labour costs was high and I cannot accept it as reasonable because -

i. It was a normal service ;
ii. They identified 1 bulb which needed replacement but in actual fact there was 2 which needed replacement ;
iii. The bulbs were not changed because they did not have them in stock;
iv. The engine oil was costly but I think not that good for the Ipsum and not long lasting as the cheaper TMO.

I find it hard to accept the above. Thus, that may be my final visit to Mutiara for service.

Tyres replacement

Visited a few shop. I was quoted RM490 and RM435 per piece for Michelin Primacy LC from 2 separate shops (I wonder why the great difference since both shops displayed Michelin logo and the tyres are newly introduced in the market) and RM390 per piece for Michelin XM1 (albeit difference in size a bit - 215/60/16 instead of the original 205/60/16).

Currently I am waiting for the price confirmation for Pirelli. I was quoted RM530 per piece but the dealer is yet to come back to me with the model and year made of the tyres.

Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan

The Ipsum covered about 1,500km last weekend. Johor Bahru - Palong - Kuantan - Kuala Terengganu - Kota Bharu - Kuala Terengganu - Kuantan - Segamat - Johor Bahru.

Seems like we need to replace the tyres sooner than we think. Thinking about Pirelli P6.

New Battery

This morning, the starter sounded a bit slow compared to normal starts. After a stop, it became more slow than the first start. Thus, I bring it to a car battery dealer at Taman Bahagia, at Jalan Tampoi.

During test (the engine was still running), the dealer told me that the battery should be replaced. I tried to sound sceptical. So, the dealer ask me to turn off the engine and he said that the engine will not start after that because of battery failure. True enough, the engine did not start after that.

I bought a maintenance free battery by Century from the dealer (NS60) for RM185. Few month back, a friend paid RM250. May be battery prices have come down.

The battery came with 12 months warranty.

The engine started as usual after the battery change.

Saw a Singapore registered one last weekend. IMHO better looking than Estima, Alphard or Oddysey. Found this review.

The Japanese MPV is fast becoming a 'must-have' accessory for someone living the Singapore dream. Just a few models commonly seen plying our local roads include Wishes, Estimas and Picnics (from Toyota) and the Odysseys, Streams and Airwaves from Honda.

Where then, does this new Mark X Zio stand, with today’s wide array of modern family-oriented carriages?

Not too long ago in a not so far-off land, the Lexus RX300/Toyota Harrier was considered the ultimate status symbol-SUV for the well heeled family. Many “towkays” (Chinese businessmen) and their “tai-tais” (socialite wives) had one. With its luxurious interior and lofty seating, the vehicle was soon associated with elitism and the bourgeois.

Obviously, Toyota has not forgotten the other target markets (except maybe sports coupes) and we jumped at the opportunity to satisfy our curiosity with one of their “mixed offerings” – a luxury MPV/estate-wagon that houses seven.

When we first set eyes on our ride of the day, it hardly set pulses racing. With a name like Mark X Zio, one would expect it to be sculpted like the muscular and aggressive Mark X sedan. However with its unusual chrome front grille, elongated body and belta-like snout, we could not help but feel a little disappointed.

The rear LED tail lamps, curved wheel arches and the huge ‘X’ logo on its bonnet was the redeeming point of the overall design, and gave a classy, sporty touch to an otherwise uninspiring exterior. Our test drive unit came with optional HID headlights, which were useless in broad, sunny daylight anyway.

Comfort

Staring at the Toyota keyless entry system, a technologically klutzy driver, or more aptly put, yours truly, didn’t know where the ignition keyslot was, because there was none! But of course, depressing the brake and pressing the ‘engine start’ button isn’t rocket science. The gentle purr of the engine, followed by the lighting up of the Optitron meters, was a sight for sore eyes.

In the sweltering heat, the icy cool aircon was a treat. It was like experiencing an evening breeze during Perth’s winter season, and soon, the interior climate felt like a Genting highlands trip. We started caressing the smooth velour fabric seats, which really feels like upholstery material used for luxurious furniture.

Exploring the various storage spaces and cubby holes like Indiana Jones, we discovered a hidden cup holder, two dashboard storage compartments….and not much else.

One could probably increase the value of this vehicle by throwing in a DVD player and maybe a reverse camera as standard.

The Zio easily sits up to 8 normal human beings (barring the fact that some people consider Shaquille O'Neal normal). Of course the rear seats will be a little crammed if the people in the middle section have long legs, but overall the vehicle was well spaced out.

For the physically active weekenders, the rear and middle seats fold down easily for huge amounts of storage space where one can place a cooler box, bicycle, golf bags, picnic basket, and still have space for a foldable deck chair. As a passenger transporter, the rear seats prop up to carry granny and that pesky kid from next door. Well, that’s what grandmothers are for anyway.

When one goes for a black tie event, the rear seats can be folded in and covered by a removable luggage compartment lid. That should more than conceal the ice cream stains left by the abovementioned, pesky youngin’.

Driving Impressions

Releasing the footbrake pedal, we drove off into the dark (-ish) tunnels of the KPE. The 163bhp, 2AZ-FE engine switched from a gentle purr to a melodious hum. Handling was nothing short of divine. The responsive steering turned sweetly and smoothly, and the brakes, though sensitive, were as alert as a Gurkha soldier when activated.

In the dim lights of the tunnel, the Optitron meters displayed outside temperature, fuel consumption and mileage so clearly that we were tempted to drive the vehicle only where total darkness engulfed the cabin, just to see their beautiful glow!

Higher than usual speeds were easily attainable, and yours truly did not have to floor the throttle to get the best out of the 2.4 l DOHC engine. Overtaking, switching lanes and slowing down were all executed as gracefully as a ballerina, all this with a rested left arm, half closed eyes and casual demeanor too.

Glancing into the rear view mirror, we noticed our colleague in dreamland, snoozing like a baby, while the photographer in the front passenger seat was snapping away from every imaginable angle possible.

In fact, we regretted not placing a cup of water in the cupholder, then speeding at tight corners to put the Zio to the sword, very much like the protagonist in Initial D. (ed. And you wonder why we do not get our work done...) Our colleague would still be asleep though, pretty much due to the vehicle’s excellent noise insulation characteristics.

Why would you get one?

The Zio retails for $98,380 from Fabulous International, the kind souls who allowed us to take this vehicle for many a spin. This is correct as of 28th February 2008. the Zio goes for S$98,380. That’s slightly more expensive than its fiercest rival, the Honda Odyssey, which as of 28th February 2008, goes for $94,800.

Of course, the basic Odyssey model seems aesthetically more stylish. But although Mark X Zio may not possess the angular, sporty styling of its Honda competitor, it wins hands down in terms of comfort and refinement.

And even though on paper the dimensions of both vehicles seem too close for comfort, the Zio gave the team enough space to stretch their tired legs, and even sleep on the job.

We might suggest throwing in a DVD player, reverse sensor camera, and body kit with 16 inch sports rims, and maybe a navigation system for that price though…

To Meguiar's Malaysia

Hi Meguiar's,

It all started when I was looking for a good leather seats cleaner and
conditioner for my Proton Perdana V6. I heard how good Meguiar's
products are and came across Meguiar's Gold Class Rich Leather Cleaner
& Conditioner. I think my Perdana deserves it, so I bought it. It was
the only Meguiar's product which I used since 2004, and used
regularly.

In 2007, I sat in another 2004 Perdana V6 and noticed how well I have
maintained my leather seats with Meguiar's. My seats still shining
like new with no visible cracks and clean.

In 2008, I purchased a reconditioned MPV from Japan, a 2003 Toyota
Ipsum. The dealer gave me a fresh coating of paint - solid black. I
noticed that the Garage which did the re-spray uses Meguiar's to prep
all cars for delivery. The car was delivered to me free from swirl.

With an aim of maintaining it, I purchased Meguiar's Shine Microfibre
Towel to rinse the car after every wash. I am still not wanting to
spend more than my limit (RM60 per purchase). I bought third party
wax, carpet cleaners, everything.

Soon, I realized even with great care (two buckets system, etc), I
cannot prevent minor swirls from making their appearance on the paint.
I started reading on the web and found out about Meguiar's NXT Tech
Wax 2.0 which is said to be a good synthetic wax which can help
removing minor swirl.

I went to Eunos 1Utama to look for it. Boy, RM128 is definitely not
cheap for a can of wax. But I quickly remind myself about my Perdana
leather seats. I didn't think it was cheap when I first purchased it,
but it delivers back what I paid for. I bought the NXT Tech Wax 2.0
Paste together with Meguiar's Quick Detailer for claying compound.

It didn't take me long to complete the Ipsum. I wash, clay the
paintwork and apply a layer of NXT 2.0.

I am really satisfied with the result. The black is now deeper, and
free from minor swirls.

The Ipsum looks exactly like when it first came out from the Garage
except a better looking alloys because I have clayed it!

Now, I'm waiting for the free Meguiar's Ultimate Wipe microfibre
detailing cloths, hopefully.

Sound deadening for the front hood

The Ipsum came with remote central locking. The key also acts as a transponder for the system.

After long overdue, yesterday the Ipsum is installed with an alarm system. The system consists a shock sensor, 2 transponders and wires. The shock sensor's sensitiveness can be personally set to my taste. Yet to do it.

The Ipsum now auto-lock itself upon engine starts and auto un-lock when the engine is turned off.

The front hood received a cover (no cover prior to this). Reason - I don't want too much heat on the hood's paint. The cover also resulted in a more steady hood. It is now felt more solid. I feel it is now a bit quieter. Damage - RM150 for the cover.

The odometer is now 68,214 km. My Ipsum went through another routine normal service. As usual, M7 semi-synthetic engine oil with M7 oil filter costed me RM125 (FOC Mutiara Motor t-shirt). Then, the mechanic charged me RM28 for labour, inclusive of a bottle of engine flush.

The aligment of the tyres were re-do. RM45 for alignment at Michelin Taman Pelangi, Johor Bahru.

Nokia E71 & Garmin Mobile XT

The E71 is still serving me well.

I have been wanting to install Garmin on the E71 for a while now. I did it last week. Prior to that, I have Google Maps installed. During my trip to Penang, it helped me getting around Penang and looking for the famous Nasi Kandar spots. We found the best Nasi Kandar (at Masjid Kapitan Keling & Nasi Kandar Line Clear) through Google Maps. Google Maps is good but it was difficult to drive and glancing at the map to know where we should be going.

I purchased a handphone holder from Novacell, at AEON Tebrau City. The holder gripped the side driver's windows.

Yesterday, I gave Garmin a try in Johor Bahru.

I have stayed permanently in Johor Bahru for more than 5 years. We are not homely type, we go out a lot. With Garmin, yesterday I found an old bicycle shop at Kampung Ungku Mohsin. To tell the truth, I got the address from Yellow Pages (I browse on the E71). Though the shop is old, it has good bicycles in stock. The point of the matter was, I was in short of time. I need to pick up my kid from his lesson and I wanted to get his bike repaired before that. From Yelllow Pages, I identified the closest bicycle shop and with Garmin I got there with shortest possible time (and found the place). Walla, job done with plenty of time left for something else.

Then, we think we want to get some drink first before the pick up. I browsed Garmin directory (called Point of Interest - downloaded from Malfreemaps) and found 1 Cendol stall not far away from our route (Garmin shows the distance and the estimated time to reach the spot). We have not been to this Cendol stall before but I'm happy we found it. I have never taste better Cendol in Johor Bahru before yesterday.

The good things about Garmin which I can think of -

1. It gives voice direction. You can focus on driving. It is like you have someone beside you thinking about which route to take to reach your destination. Of course you have to tell where to go.

2. If you know what you are looking for, it is easier to decide where to go. In my experience stated above, I got the best Cendol I ever had in Johor Bahru, and still arrive early to pick up my boy. Do I need to mention that I got his bike fixed too?

3. Know our town better. It is where we live. After this practise, I know I am going to know the best from other people's town when I get there.

4. All maps, infos etc is stored in the memory card of my E71. So, there will be no extra charge by the carrier. Satellite signal for the GPS is free! Data retrieving is quick too since everything is stored within the phone!

5. It utilised the built in GPS receiver of E71. So, no extra hardware is needed (if you already have GPS enable phone, get this!). Standalone GPS device can cost RM500 and more.

6. Thank you Malfreemaps, they supplied regularly updated maps, etc for Garmin covering Malaysia and Singapore for free. And I have planned to contribute to the community.

My wife has just got herself Nokia 5800 (featured Symbian S60 Ver 5). Nokia E71 is Ver 3. I installed Garmin Mobile XT on the new phone today. I think the 5800 is a better Garminer than my E71 because of its big screen, can be viewed in landscape mode... & touchscreen!!

Car already travel in town the day before 80 km. Re-filled again at Sungai Besi after 300 km. Stopped at Ayer Keroh, engine idling with aircond for about 30 minutes. Average speed 115km/h.
Consumption was 10 km/litre.

Reached Jalan Padang Tembak 2 PM.

Followed 3 Estimas near Penang. I think they are from the Estimas' Club. I think WNR3298 was one of them.

Wheel balancing & alignment

Currently, my Ipsum is in the hand of the Michelin guys at Taman Pelangi, Johor Bahru. We are going to Penang again this weekend. The wheels need re-balancing and re-alignment.

The brake pads do not need replacement. The absorbers are in good shape too.

The front disc brake is rusting. I'm not sure if this is normal. I've never noticed the same on my 5 years old Perdana V6. Got to check this out at myIpsum.net's forum.

The tyres are still good. I'm quite satisfied with it.

M7 Semi-Synthetic Engine Oil

On my previous service, I switched to Castrol Magnatec semi-synthetic engine oil because it is cheaper to the M7 semi-synthetic engine oil. My wife was complaining because the engine felt sluggish after the oil change. I felt it too.

We moved back to M7 before going to Shah Alam.

The pricey engine oil is really good. The engine now is back to original performance.

It was a hot sunny day.

Fuel consumption was 10km/litre.

Ipsum to Penang

This morning, we woke up with bored feeling. The kids have been down with chicken pox for several days now. We have stayed at home since they had them. The kids were kind of feeling it too from their behaviour.

With no accommodation booking, we decided to drive leisurely to Penang. I filled the Ipsum up at Jalan Skudai, Johor with Shell Super (the usual Shell Regular that I use not being sold there), and tyres to 230 inflation (the manufacturer's recommended figure).

The Ipsum was comfortable. I had no backache or felt tired when I arrived in Penang. The tension only built up when we were looking for a hotel room. Since it was school holiday, many hotels were fully booked. We stayed at Traders Hotel. The hotel situated beside the tallest tower in Penang - the KOMTAR.

I only wished that the Ipsum is equipped with cruise control and better audio system.

I did filled up at Damansara R&R, the Ipsum did 11.4 km per litre of petrol. Not bad for an MPV travelling leisurely usually at 110 km/h, both the aircond blowers were on with automatic temperature control set at around 26 degree celcius. The weather was hot. The traffic was smooth.

We started the journey around 10 am from JB Town Centre, made a quick stop at UTHO, Parit Raja, Batu Pahat for about 45 minutes and then straight to Georgetown. We arrived around 7.30 pm.

New Office & New Gadgets

Pardon me for not being able to update this blog. My new office has been completed and has been occupied since early November, 2008. First day working at the new office went through without major hick-up. My frustration was with my internet provider. A simple written instruction / request seems difficult for a big multi-corporation. Thankfully, that problem was solved within the same week.

My P990i started to play me strange noises while I'm making calls. Thus, making it difficult for me to have decent conversations. Its camera has never worked months before that.

Armed with the original box and receipt, I traded in the P990i for an AP set Nokia E71. The shop gave RM400 for my P990i, thus I have to top up a mere RM950.

As a result, I missed the chance to switch to Maxis and to get the discounted mobile phone.

Soon after I inserted my SIM Card on the E71, Celcom sent me the data configuration. Everything was so smooth. It saves me from calling Celcom Helpline or getting the configuration from the internet.

To my surprise, Celcom did also contacted me to ask if my data connection was ok. I think Celcom has increase their service standard as a result of the number portability. Good news to consumer!

The Nokia E71 is a dream comes true for me. It could do all that I wished for, and many others.

The day after I got my E71, both my kids were hospitalised because of dengue fever. It all seemed as if they have been planned. I couldn't tell what will happen if I didn't get the new phone. It was easier for me while I was in the hospital to check for emails (faster connection) and I'm not worried about the battery. Even with heavy usage, the battery will last the day.

Though I am yet to get away with the habbit, I no longer have to close every application on my new phone. The hardware on the E71 is a workhorse.

I have not plan for any new phone acquisition in this short future. But seeing the blurry photos really urging my nerve to do so.

Today I found out about 'Mobile Number Postability' at Maxis.

Mobile number portability (MNP) is the freedom to move from one mobile operator to another within the same market, while retaining your mobile number. It allows the customer to change his/her mobile service provider without losing his/her mobile number.

MNP is a government directive and regulatory requirement. There will be a Limited Live Trial from 29 August, to early October 2008. MNP will officially be launched in Malaysia from early October 2008 onwards.

I can't wait for this to happen. I think I will get the new phone with the new provider (got some discount there - for example RM999 for a Motorola Q9h!).

A Good Day of Waxing

I spent part of my weekend waxing my Ipsum. I gave it a good wash (yet to implement 2 buckets system) with Turtle Wax F21 Car Wash and then slowly with Car Plan Ultimate Wax. I purchased Macquire's drying cloth and a special cloth for removing the wax from the car. I think they are quite good.

Accident at Tenggaruh, Mersing

6th July 2008 4.45 pm

I was traveling from Endau, Johor to Kulai, Johor and reached Tenggaruh at the time.

Because of a carelessness by a motorcyclist, my Ipsum got into an accident.

This was the motorcyclist

The place of accident was at the front of a bus stop with a row of small restaurant fronting the bus stop. There was a large croud.

Immediately after the accident I went out of the car, and I was attacked by a local person. The person tried to punch me in the face but I blocked him with my arm.

Scratches as a result

The person was grabbed by other people and prevented from attacking me. After consulted by them, he soon realized that I was not at fault.

The motorcyclist said sorry to me, telling me that the motorcycle had no insurance and that he did not hold any driving license. But the fact that he dumped his motorcycle like this made me feel something was not right -

The local told me that this could be a 'motor panas'

Not too long after that, a policeman came and inspected the motorcycle. He did not ask any question from me because he had been briefed by the spectator who witnessed the accident.

Difficult to see?

The policeman made a call to his office to request for a check on the number.

He then received a return call. Immediately after he put his phone down, the motorcyclist was handcuffed. I was told not to photograph the motorcyclist after that.

I was told by the policeman that the registration number on the motorcycle was fake. The motorcycle was stolen from the owner who reside at Kota Tinggi, Johor.

I still do not know the correct registration number of this bike

The motorcyclist was brought to the police station (Sungai Ambat) and I was told to wait for the traffic police.

The traffic police came to ask me how the accident took place and then I was told to go back to Traffic Police Station at Mersing to lodge my report.

I went to lodge my accident report and after that a report against the person who attacked me. I was asked to go to Sungai Ambat Police Station after lodging my report against the person who attack me because the incident took place near the Sungai Ambat station.

I was interviewed at Sungai Ambat police station. I asked the police to caution the person who attacked me.

Meanwhile I discovered that Lotus now recommends the Yokohama C.drive as a replacement for the original-spec Pirellis, which are no longer made.

I do not know which Pirelli the writer was referring to. To me any Pirelli will mean the C.Drive is a bargain purchase.

Trust Airinx-GT

My Ipsum went to its 2nd service 2 days ago.

I did asked my mechanic to pack the existing air-filter back to my Airinx-GT box.

Last night, I checked the box and found a surprise. The old air-filter is also Airinx-GT! Mutiara Motors must have replaced my original filter before first handing over because the filter still look like new!

Mutiara Motors did told me (before I took my Ipsum) that they have changed all replaceable parts to their in-house brand (i.e M7, Trust, G-Reddy). They were not joking.

I have kept the old filter aside for later use.

I went to Mutiara Motors this morning. Their garage was busy, thus they cannot attend to my Ipsum. Thus I purchased M7 Semi-Synthetic Engine Oil, M7 Oil Filter and Trust Airinx-GT Air Filter for service to be done at my regular garage.

Tyres

It is now more expensive to travel than before the increase in petrol price.

Rumors are circulating that many prices are going up including tyres.

Last weekend I was told that the standard tyres for Perodua Viva have increased from RM150 per piece to RM210 per piece.

The standard tyres for Naza Ria have increased in price from RM2xx to RM3xx.

I contacted my tyre dealer - City Tyre (Michelin at Taman Pelangi, Johor Bahru), no price change for me because of the arrangement I made before this.

Unfortunately the Michelin MXV8 has been out of stock again.

I found out from Auto Express, UK (September 2006 review / test) that Yokohama C.Drive is actually not a bad tyre. Thus, I ordered the same for RM290 per piece, made in Philippine inclusive of balancing.

The tyres should arrive soon.

Standard features

Standard equipment in the GLX includes two front airbags, efficient airconditioning (with roof vents to seating rows two and three, plus a fan control behind the driver's seat), ABS brakes with emergency full power assist, a CD player, remote central locking and one-touch power windows with jam protection on all four doors.

The Ultima adds side and curtain airbags on the front seats, alloy wheels, roof rails, a cassette player, tinted windows and upgraded trim.

Retained value

Avensis is relatively new, so it has no resale history as yet.

Design and function

Ergonomics

You slide straight in to the high, plush, driver's seat. There's plenty of travel, the wheel is height adjustable and the seat itself is also height/tilt adjustable. The driving position is excellent for short and tall people alike.

Vision is clear around the car except for the thick base of the front pillar, which, when turning, slightly obscures the view between the steeply angled windscreen and the side windows.

The dash is clean, simple and efficient in its design, as is usually the case from Toyota. There's a surfeit of oddment storage bins, while the space between the two front seats is clear.

A blot on the copy book is the column shift automatic lever on the left. Tall drivers may find it difficult to select 2 or L because their knee is in the way. It's also possible to accidentally knock the transmission out of gear.

Innovation

The Avensis is quite conventional, though it has some clever interior design ideas such as the back seats which fold flat into the load floor.

Safety

The Avensis has not yet been independently crash tested, but features such as ABS brakes with emergency full power assist are welcome. Side and curtain airbags for the front seats are only provided on the top of the line Ultima, so those who can't afford this model miss out on proper side impact protection.

A lap-only belt is fitted to the middle of seating row two - a serious omission given that this seat in a people mover is frequently occupied.

Security

Remote central locking and an immobiliser are standard.

Comfort

All seats are comfortable, except the middle position in row two, which is adjacent to the split in the bench and quite hard.

The driver's seat is generously padded and comfortable on a long day's drive.

Space and practicality

The Avensis scores well here.

Toyota claims 18 configuration options for the Avensis' 2-3-2 seat layout.

The 60/40 split-fold row two seat is adjustable for travel, so you can tailor leg room to suit. Comfort is fine for the two outboard occupants, and the backrest angle can be adjusted.

However, as mentioned previously, the person in the middle gets a raw deal, with a hard, lumpy cushion adjacent to the split bench and a lap-only belt.

Several other people movers offer superior row two seating for three occupants.

Access to row three is very easy with a simple tilt/slide mechanism on both sides of the row two seat. Leg room depends upon where you have the row two seat positioned on its track, but it is possible to set row two so that all passengers have reasonable space.

The row three seats are quite comfortable (for back stalls), with firm padding, high, adjustable backrests and a covered bin/cup holder on both sides.

Both row three seats fold easily forward into the load floor when not required. The load area in this configuration is long and wide, and floor length can be adjusted by moving row two. A deep bin is provided under the floor for extra storage; the space saver spare is carried externally under the front of the cabin.

Both sides of the row two seat double fold forward without compromising front seat travel. This gives you nearly two metres of floor to play with.

Child restraint anchors are provided on the back of each row two and three seating position. A shopping bag hook is also fitted to the back of the driver's seat.

Build and finish quality

Excellent in all respects.

On the road

Fuel efficiency

Unladen, the relatively light Avensis returns good economy. Around town, the test Ultima used 12-13 litres/100 km, while on the highway it used 8-9 litres/100 km. Given the fact that the engine has to work hard when you have a load on board, these figures would probably increase significantly in these circumstances.

Performance

The Avensis uses a lightweight, all alloy 110 kW 2.0 litre four-cylinder engine with variable inlet valve timing, the same unit (with tuning modifications) found in the RAV4.

A four-speed automatic is the only transmission choice. A five-speed-manual GLX was available for a short time after launch, but is no longer offered.

Although the Avensis is fairly light, the 2.0 litre engine is too small and lacking in accessible torque for a wagon of this carrying capacity.

The 2.0 litre produces strong performance above 3500 rpm. However a full load exaggerates its lack of low down pulling power, and it has to be worked quite hard around the suburbs.

The deleted five-speed-manual transmission would be a happier match with the 2.0 litre than the four-speed auto, which has widely spaced ratios and frequently finds itself becalmed below 3000 rpm.

It then kicks back to the lower gears and revs the engine hard in search of power. This constant transmission hunting, especially in hilly country, is annoying.

Ride

The suspension can crash and thump occasionally on very rough surfaces, but generally the ride is compliant and comfortable.

Handling and steering

The Avensis is relatively short and manoeuvrable, which makes it very easy to drive around town and park. On the highway, its dynamics are at the better end of the people mover scale. It's quite taut and secure on rough roads, with precise steering.

Braking

This particular test car's front discs were warped, which caused the wheel to shake and resulted in a loss of braking performance and efficiency. NRMA tests, on an example with properly functioning brakes, found them to be good.

Smoothness and quietness

This is an area where the Avensis needs more work. Although it is quite refined when cruising, the engine is harsh and noisy at high revs. The test car's tyres generated significant noise on coarse bitumen, which caused some reverberation in the cabin, and the suspension occasionally transmitted excessive road shock.

Summary

Toyota's Avensis Verso has plenty of space, and offers you many options as to how it is used. Quality, equipment and Toyota's usual first class reliability and durability are other attractions. However the 2.0 litre/four-speed-automatic drivetrain is not entirely appropriate to the people mover application, while refinement and the suitability of the middle row to carry three people are not quite up to scratch.

5.8 Sen More Per KM

6 of us went to Parit Jawa and Alor Gajah yesterday. Our first long journey after the fuel price increase.

I drove as careful as possible with the aim of maximising kilometre per litre. Idling was unavoidable as kids were sleeping, disturbing them would be unwise.

506.8 km and more than 1/2 hour of idling, RM115.99 was pumped this morning. That's 22.8 sen per kilometre.

Usually on normal drive (not so fuel efficient kind of way) the reading was 17 sen.

I have found one at Bangsar, 2003 (not facelifted) quoted at RM 126k, and i asked for RM120,000 and still negotiating.

I wish to ask your opinion that is it worth it if I get the Ipsum around RM120k-123k for the version (photos and spec attached)? I might commit in this 2 days.

For the Estima, we did consider it since the price is also around RM13oK plus, but I worry that the car is under power since it is using the same 2.4L engine, and I assume that Ipsum will give more kick compared to estima :-) (I am currently driving Perdana V6, 2002). I think for the size, i prefer Ipsum.

And Toyota Wish is selling at RM120k(without body kits) and RM125k(with body kits).

But one good thing is Naza provides 1 year warranty :-)

Oh, you're Johorean too! We have more in common, I'm still driving my 2004 Perdana V6 (no modification) on daily basis. The Ipsum is used by my wife. Power wise, I think the Ipsum will win any time. Considering the load you carry is the same, the Ipsum is slightly more economical on the highway and more comfortable than the Perdana V6. What more if your Ipsum is 15" alloys compared to my 16".

For your information, Wish 1.8 (2004) with bodykit at Mutiara Motors is around RM115k (not OTR), with 1 month warranty.

I assume you have viewed the car you mentioned and the price you referred to (i.e RM120k - RM123k) is inclusive of road tax and insurance (according to http://www.paultan.org, the Ipsum should get RM200 discount from our road tax).

There are few variances of Ipsum 240 series in Japan. Since you mentioned that the car came with half wooden steering, it is probably the top of the range '240u G Selection' as it is the only model that came with half wood. You can see the differences here -

First, I think you may not want to get the full-top-of-the-range of the Ipsum - 240u G Selection 4x4. With the latest on fuel price announced this evening, just ensure that it is the 2 wheel drive version.

Secondly, I think you will have to determine that the one showed to you is 240u G Selection. From the colour and interior matching schedule, we know that for the one with Beige interior, the only exterior colour available should be White Pearl Mica. It should be Pearl Mica paint and not Solid paint. I think, if the exterior colour is not Pearl Mica, something is not right.

The alloy supplied should be 15" with 205/65/15 tyres. See the kilometres done on the car, compare if it matches the wear on the tyres. On my car, the previous owner changed to a better quality tyres (2006 made), so no way for me to determine this. I just assume that the previous owner wanted the best for his ride, and really took care of the car (there were exterior paint protectors on the inside of the door handles / opener).

Do not forget that the G Selection should come with adjustable absorbers and Xenon Headlamp. So, check it out.

I think RM120k - RM123k OTR should be a bargain for this Ipsum 240u G Selection since it is the top of the range one (you'll get electric seat / pearl mica colour / glass roofs / 6 Airbags) PROVIDED THAT it should come with at least 1 month warranty for all mechanical parts - gearbox, all absorbers (the electronically adjustable absorbers cost more than RM1k) including engine mountings, new v-belts, new lubricants for everything which need it, and the price should include complete re-sprayed of the exterior (I got it) AND replacement of those privacy glass to one which complies with our current law.

On my personal preference, I don't like the after market skirting installed on the Ipsum. It may be a sign that the previous owner likes to mod the car / does not care about the originality of the car.

Another thing, beige interior is hard to maintain. I once viewed a used and registered 2001 Ipsum with Beige interior - the condition once it is dirtied is - you will prefer not to seat there. But, this is my preference. You may view it otherwise.

Is this Ipsum 6 or 7 seater?

Yes, the sale representative did said that it is Ipsum 240 "UG" which I am not so familiar with, but he said that it isthe "top spec".

I think I must ask him these questions before decide -

1) Color : Pearl White or Solid white?

2) The steering is half wood?

3) 2WD or 4WD? (most important at the moment)

4) 6 or 7 seater?

5) Is the price OTR and doest it come with Re-spray? (I don't think it is included)

Tomorrow my PV6,2002 will be valued for trade-in.

Oh, I must mention that I haven't seen the car yet :-{ still at East Malaysia (Sabah/Salawak). Sales representative said that the car will only be shipped-in after I paid downpayment (strange?). I have not experience this before.

Yes, one very important thing to ask, your Ipsum's fuel consumption compared to Perdana V6. This might be the key for me to change my decision to own Ipsum (ideal car for me at the moment) after the announcement by our PM. (My Perdana V6 gives me around 450-550 km/RM110, recently down to 4++km only).

I think imported Ipsums are readily available in Kuala Lumpur for your viewing. Unless you really trust this sales representative, I see no reason why you should commit.

I think Encik Azrin that I mentioned earlier got a better deal at Bangsar, RM120k OTR for 2003 240s. I paid RM127k in January for 2003 240i Type S (lower spec).

Fuel consumption comparison - in town, my Perdana V6 is more economical. At highway, Ipsum is more economical (same weight being carried). 2 days ago I pumped RM87-xx for 4xx km (town) into my Perdana V6.

Another thing, the interest rate which I got is 2.3% per annum. You should be able too!

Last week, I was contacted by one Encik Azrin who purchased a 2003 Ipsum 240s (not facelifted) at Bangsar for RM120k OTR. His friend purchased a 2003 240s (facelifted) for RM130k OTR.

2 weeks ago I went to Naza World at Taman Tun Dr Ismail. They have a silver 240s 2005. Not sure about the price because the displayed price was RM24x,xxx. They should give some discount.

I was told that there are few dealers near Sunway (near Kontena Nasional - the route from LDP to Taman Dato' Haron). Try to visit there.

This outlet located behind Giant Hypermarket, Plentong, Johor Bahru. It has an impressive image from afar, especially with the large TOM'S trademark.

I went there just to have a feel of the place and hoping to see Tom's accessories for my Ipsum.

There are no Tom's accessories being displayed there apart from the consumables for normal services (I do not know for which model).

When I asked for alloys, I was shown to 3 model of common alloys not made by Tom's. These 3 models were stored in boxes, and waiting for the owners to come and pick them up.

A bad first impression.

A quick check at Tom's homepage tells me that the only authorised Tom's in Malaysia is in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur.

The visit may well be my last visit there. A good attempt to impress imported Toyota owners.

Seriously considering the alloys from the Alphard. May be my Ipsum will look like the above once they are fitted? (The above pictures of 240s with 19" donuts)

As for tyres, today I went to see Falken ZE-912. A new comfort tyre from Falken. It is much cheaper compared to Michelin MXV8 even if I opt for 215/5o/17. Threadwear 360 Traction AA Temp A (correct me if I'm wrong).

I think the above photos look better than the next photos, right?
